The Borges Family Story:
The Borges Family Celebrates 50 years of operation
est. in 1967
It a true blessing when a family business can celebrate 50 year of operation. It all began with a young man named Sam Borges and his dream to do the things in life that brought joy to not only himself and his family, but to bring joy to all around him as well.
"These sleigh rides are more than just a job. They are more than just a business. People use business to pay their bills or make their mortgages. These sleigh rides are more like a part of me. A part of me I can't live without, like my heart and soul." -Sam Borges
These are the words that stay true to all of us here at the Sleigh Rides. We live day in and day out carrying the passion and heart that Sam Borges built this company from. Every day that the sun rises Sam and Rosie are with us reminding us all why there is no greater satisfaction then doing what you love. "If you love what you do, you never word a day in your life."
Sam and Rosie Borges married in 1949 , and had four beautiful sons. Dean, Don, David and Dwight. On David's 12th Birthday the family went down to the new Dodge dealership where they were raffling off a Shetland pony. The first name was called and the lady did not show to claim her little pony, the next name called was David Borges. The Borges Family naming their first pony Little Joe from the family's favorite character in Bonanza. The idea of horse drawn sleigh rides began to build. Sam remembered one of his many family's vacations to Tahoe before moving to the beautiful jewel of the sierras himself, of seeing sleigh rides. However, there were pulled by tracker not horse, and he wanted a sleigh pulled by horse. Sam got his first horse and sleigh, put on his best suit and went to talk to Brooks Park to ask if he could use the Park's cattle field when his cattle have been moved to the valley for the winter. Brooks and Sam both found this idea to be a fun activity and shake hands on their new agreement. Thus the Sleigh rides began that winter. The youngest son, Dwight Borges carried the same blazing passion as his father, and eventually took over the reins of the business. Though the business was passed to down, Sam continued every day to show up ready to drive a sleigh. Rosie too, often came to work with her husband and youngest son, who Rosie always calmed as "her buddy". Dwight Borges Later married a young lady Dianna and excepting her four children (Rhiannon, Christian, Austin and Veronica) as his own. Their children soon found a positions in the company. They learned to drive and sat with their parents and new grandfather listening to the stories they told. The youngest daughter Veronica, found that same passion that Sam and Dwight bared and currently works side-by-side with her mother and for all rightful purposes, father.
